The University of Helsinki is giving about 50 start-up grants to qualified students who are accepted to study in an International Master's Degree Programme. The amount of each grant will be 1000-1500 euro. The grants are not meant to cover living.

The scholarship is aimed at students studying for a Master’s degree in the University of Oulu two-years.

Scholarship options

Scholarships in Finland are mainly available for Doctoral level studies and research only, however, there are some exceptions. For example, if you are a non-EU citizen and have been accepted into a Master’s degree programme in which you are charged a tuition fee, you can apply for certain institutional scholarships.

Centre for International Mobility Fellowships Finland

CIMO (Centre for International Mobility) Fellowships programme is open to young researchers (after Master-level but not post-doctorate) from all countries and from all academic fields. Full details: 

‣ Scholarship covers: The monthly allowance is 800-1 200 euros (in 2009). The scholarship is intended to cover living expenses in Finland for a single person. No additional allowance for housing is paid. Expenses due to international travel to and from Finland are not covered by Centre for International Mobility.
Description‣ No tuition fees are charged in Bachelor’s level degree programmes in Finland. The same is true of several Master’s programmes. The cost of this education is covered by the Finnish government, therefore, there are usually no scholarships available.
‣ However, in those Master's level programmes that charge a tuition fee from non-EU/EEA students, institutional scholarships for non-EU/EEA students are available. These institutional scholarships are always applied for directly from the university in question.
‣ The Centre for International Mobility Fellowships programme is open to young researchers (after Master-level but not post-doctorate) from all countries and from all academic fields.

‣ These research scholarships are for study at Universities and academic institutions in Finland.

‣ Please note: Centre for International Mobility does not have any scholarship options for Bachelor’s or Master’s level studies in Finland (excluding the Master's level scholarship programme for advanced-level degree students of the Finnish language).

Eligibility

‣ The prerequisite for applying is that the visiting researcher must have established contacts with the Finnish host university.

‣ Please note that a prospective student can not apply for a Centre for International Mobility Fellowship independently.
‣ The Finnish university department wishing to host the student applies to Centre for International Mobility for the grant – in other words, the applicant must be the hosting Finnish university.
Scholarship Application Method
‣ There are no annual application deadlines in the Centre for International Mobility Fellowship programme – that is, applications may be considered at all times.
‣ The prerequisite for applying is that the visiting researcher must have established contacts with a Finnish host university - please see the section 'Doctoral Admissions' for further information.

If a Finnish university is willing to host you, then the Finnish university department wishing to host you can apply to Centre for International Mobility for the grant on your behalf. In other words, only the hosting Finnish university can act as an "applicant" in the Centre for International Mobility Fellowship programme.

‣ A detailed set of guidelines for a Centre for International Mobility Fellowship application is provided (in English) at the end of the downloadable application form, see the link below Centre for International Mobility Fellowship application form and instructions. 
‣ There are no annual application deadlines in the Centre for International Mobility Fellowship programme. Applications may be considered at all times. However, please note that applications should be submitted at least 5 months before the intended scholarship period.
‣ Decisions will be made within approximately 3 months after receipt of application.
‣ Please note that although the application form is in Finnish, Swedish and English the guidelines are only in Finnish since, as stated above, it is the Finnish host department which applies for the grant from Centre for International Mobility.
