Travel Photography Nomads Scholarship

You can only submit one entry and set of (maximum of 5) photos per person and you do need to be 18 at the time of the application deadline (before July 5, 2013).

English does not have to be your first language, but you do need to have conversational English for this scholarship. In order for you to get the most of the mentorship you will need to be able to understand and converse with Jason on the trip.

The images do not need to be sequential from an event, and they can be a combined from over a period of time. However, please remember every image must tell a story and THEN the images must work TOGETHER to tell a story about a PLACE you have visited. Five great stand-alone images will not win the Scholarship (especially if they are all from different places!). They must represent one place you have visited.
just give the photos context and a bit of background. You MUST include a caption for each image (see the Judging Process below). DO NOT use the Essay to tell us about your entry! Images that do not have a caption will receive a score of zero for this component
The Essay is your opportunity to tell us about yourself, it's the easiest part of the competition!
Tell us about YOU, what you hope to gain from the experience and what you hope to contribute back to the greater community through your photography. If you like even tell them why you think you should win but really this is about us learning about you and your photography. DO NOT use the essay to tell us about the images in your entry, that is what the Captions are for. If you use the Essay to tell us about your entry you will be penalised! See the Judging Process below.
It is acceptable to convert a colour digital file to black and white but process the image carefully as over-treated black and white is as unacceptable to them as over-treated colour. It will not negatively effect the chances of an image winning, but Jason personally loves traditional black and white!
They suggest a resolution of 72 ppi/dpi and a pixel length of at least 960 pixels of the longest length of the image. Photos uploaded to a Worldnomads.com journal will be resized to a maximum of 960 pixels along the longest side. The maximum pixel size of photos uploaded to flickr will depend on the type of flickr account you have (free or paid), but will be at least 1024 pixels.

They do not accept images created using HDR techniques. In addition, compositing and multiple exposures are not allowed. Sandwich shots, double exposures, photographs which consist in any way of more than one separate image and images that have been digitally manipulated are not eligible.

Types of support

There are two forms of scholarships – financial and non-monetary scholarships – both of which are often coupled together:
In the case of financial scholarships, the recipient is awarded a fixed amount, paid out on a monthly basis over a defined funding period. These types of scholarships are often full scholarships, i.e., they generally cover the applicant’s entire living expenses. Recipients of partial scholarships, however, are required to secure additional financial support to cover their living expenses. When awarded a full scholarship, recipients are generally not permitted to receive funding from other scholarships simultaneously.
In addition to financial support, many institutions also offer non-monetary scholarships. Recipients are invited to workshops, lectures and scientific conferences where they also have the opportunity to network with other scholarship holders. In most cases, these non-monetary scholarship programmes aim to create a long-standing relationship between the scholarship holder and the institution well beyond the scholarship period.
All the programmes have one thing in common, however – no one is entitled to a scholarship.

The institutions

The institutions which grant scholarships can be roughly divided up into six groups.
  1. First, there are party-affiliated foundations. They maintain close ties to the political parties represented in the German Bundestag. Consequently, they expect applicants to share their socio-political views, which the applicants often express through their social commitment.
  2. The second group is comprised of corporate-affiliated foundations. Recipients can be chosen based on their subject of study, research emphasis, social attitude, or purely on their achievement – epitomizing whatever model qualities that distinguish the namesake of the foundation.
  3. The German federal states offer scholarships based on economic or performance-oriented aspects. To apply for such scholarships, applications should be submitted directly to the universities of the state in question. Applicants are generally required to hold a higher education entrance qualification or doctoral programme qualification to be eligible for such scholarships.
  4. Social institutions , such as the large churches in Germany, offer their own scholarships. In addition to outstanding achievement, the selection committee also places strong focus on financial hardship, as well as the applicants’ commitment to use their knowledge and skills attained in Germany for the benefit of others in their home country.
  5. The major research institutions in Germany, the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation , award scholarships based on purely scientific criteria.
  6. There are also a number of student organisations run by volunteers, in which students assist other students and find supporters who are willing to help them finance their visit and thereby enable them to stay in Germany.

The 2013-2014 OU Common Scholarship Application, including Financial Aid, Sooner Heritage, Retention Scholarships, and others, is now available to admitted undergraduate and graduate OU students!

Types of Aid

The University of Oklahoma Financial Aid Services offers many federal, state and institutional financial aid programs. Financial Aid can be a combination of grants, scholarships, work-study and loans.  Grants and scholarships are considered "free money" and do not require re-payment.  Work-study allows eligible students to earn money by working on campus or with local private or public nonprofit agencies.  Student loans do require repayment, typically after the student is no longer enrolled at least half time.

Financial aid is considered any resource that can help pay for college. Students must apply for financial aid using the FREE Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Aid is awarded first come first served while funds remain.

The Council of American Overseas Research Centers Grants

The Council of American Overseas Research Centers develops programs in collaboration with our member Centers and affiliated partners.

Fellowship and Grant Opportunities

The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) and our Richard Gilder Graduate School (RGGS) are leaders in the education and training of young scientists in the natural history disciplines represented in this institution.
Our fellowships and research grants programs provide training across these disciplines, including comparative biology and the fields of anthropology, invertebrate zoology, paleontology, physical sciences (astrophysics and earth and planetary sciences), and vertebrate zoology.

Doctoral and Graduate Student Fellowships

Students applying to the Comparative Biology Ph.D. Program at the Richard Gilder Graduate School are automatically eligible for fellowship support from the school, provided in part by the generous support of Richard Gilder and the Gilder Foundation, Norma Hess (Hess Foundation, Inc.) and Sibyl Golden Family Foundation.
We also offer Graduate Fellowships for students interested in earning a PhD at one of our partner institutions (currently Columbia University, CUNY, NYU and Cornell University), when they are advised by an AMNH curator. You may also apply for cofunding in the following areas:
  Fellowship in Evolutionary Primatology,
Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Fund: North American terrestrial fauna or the
Lerner Gray Fund for Marine Research: Marine Biology.

Postdoctoral Fellowships

Newly graduated or soon-to-graduate PhDs may apply for a postdoctoral fellowship in any discipline of the AMNH. Applicants with research interests that may have broad implications for such themes as advancing our understanding of the evolution and diversity of species and the “tree of life”, genomics, and/or human and medical research through the study of other organisms may be eligible for co-funding from the Gerstner Scholar program. Some postdoctoral fellowship applicants may be eligible for support through special programs, if their areas of specialization include the study of North American terrestrial and freshwater fauna (Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Fund) or marine biology (Lerner-Gray Fund for Marine Research).

Research Grants and Student Exchange Fellowships

Seed research grants are available for students and young professionals intending to do field-based research, as well as to use the AMNH collections.
 These include
 Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Grants,
 Lerner-Gray Marine Research Grants,
 Chapman Memorial Grants
 Collection Study Grants.
Kade Fellowship to support graduate student exchanges between AMNH and French or German institutions.

Undergraduate Fellowships

Every summer AMNH hosts two National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduate Site grants: Research in Evolution and Systematics and Earth Sciences and Astrophysics. In these programs, undergraduate students who have completed their freshman through junior years may work with AMNH scientists on one of an array of potential research projects that are available each year.

medical MD-PhD Dual Degree Training / USA

MD-PhD Dual Degree Training

MD-PhD programs provide training in both medicine and research. They are specifically designed for those who want to become research physicians, also known as physician-investigators or physician-scientists. Graduates of MD-PhD programs often go on to become faculty members at medical schools, universities and research institutes.
Regardless of where they eventually work, MD-PhD candidates are being prepared for careers in which they will spend most of their time doing research, in addition to caring for patients. The MD-PhD dual career is busy, challenging, rewarding, and offers opportunities to do good for many people by advancing knowledge, developing new treatments for diseases, and pushing back the boundaries of the unknown.
